Brownies and Beers with Mr Pickles’
Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium, based on Abbeydale Road, stocks the core range of We Luv Brownies and they’re a hit with the staff as well as the customers.
So much so, that the assistant manager, Elli, has been working on some tasty beer pairings especially for us to share on our blog.
First up we have the Traditional Brownie. Packed with gooey, Belgian chocolate goodness, and with no extra flavours added, this is one for the purists. Elli explains that, although there are lots of flavours that work well with chocolate, she wanted something that would stand up to the richness of this brownie. She also wanted something that would create a bit of contrast in the mouth.
Her beer of choice is Magic Rock Brewing Company’s Common Grounds. It’s a full bodied, yet smooth, triple coffee porter. With toffee, rich fruit, vanilla and hazelnut notes to the beer, it complements the deep chocolate flavours of our traditional brownie perfectly, whilst the bitterness of the coffee contrasts against the sweetness of the chocolate. I think it’s a match made in heaven!
Moving onto one of our most popular brownies, the Salted Caramel is also rich and chocolatey but with the addition of salted caramel swirls and an oozing caramel centre.
Elli decided to choose something that would complement the caramel flavours and she recommends one of the store’s current favourites; the Saltaire XS Belgian Red. With an ABV of 7.2%, it’s a big beer which is to be expected given its Belgian style. Deep red in colour, the beer has a good caramel aroma and a rich malty flavour to complement the chocolate nicely.
Finally we have a real favourite of Elli’s, the White Chocolate Blondie. It’s made with Belgian white chocolate and we’ve added a few dark chocolate chips to offer a bit of contrast and balance the sweetness a little.
Elli wanted to take this contrast a step further so she’s paired it with the Samuel Smith’s Chocolate Stout. Made with organic chocolate malt and cocoa, the beer has a lovely depth to it which works well at balancing the sweetness of the white chocolate. Elli likens the pairing to a grown up Kinder Egg and I think that sums it up perfectly!
If you want to try these pairings at home, why not head over to Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium on Abbeydale Road? You’ll find the core range of our lovely brownies along with a wide range of lovely Yorkshire beers to try with them!
